The Cure for Mental Illness

This is a message to everyone who has been diagnosed with a mental illness. Perhaps you have been in therapy for years and years. Perhaps you have been in and out of different hospitals and psychiatric units. Perhaps you have tried every medication in the book. Perhaps you have even gone so far as to receive ECT (electroconvulsive therapy) in the hope that such a radical measure would ease your suffering.

The problem is – you still feel miserable. In fact, despite everything you have tried, you might feel worse than ever. Maybe you’ve had a counselor tell you that you are always going to have this problem and that you just need to learn to deal with it.

I am telling you today that there is a cure. You can be free from mental illness.

People have different theories about the cause of mental problems. Some believe that it is purely biological or “organic” – perhaps a genetically inherited “chemical imbalance.” Others believe it is a problem of faulty thinking. Others believe that it results from learned maladaptive behaviors. Still others believe that it is the result of spiritual oppression.

Matthew 4:23 says, “Jesus was going throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness among the people.”

Did you read that? Every kind of disease and every kind of sickness. Not just some of them – but every kind. And the good news is that this same Jesus is still alive and active today.

If your problem is physiological – Jesus can heal you. If your have learned harmful ways of thinking, you can be “transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2). If you have been conditioned to behave in unhealthy ways, you can “stop doing wrong and learn to do right” (Isaiah 1:16-17). And if you are spiritually oppressed, the power of Jesus Christ can deliver you from evil.

No matter what your situation,  Jesus offers an answer – a cure. He is bigger than your diagnosis. You may feel that turning to God is your last hope, but I am telling you that He is your first, best, and only hope. As John 8:36 says, “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
